This problem was caused when previous owner decided to ad a vanity mirror to the bathroom. The light/fan switches needed to be moved down the wall by about a foot to accommodate the vanity mirror. This is why they spliced "extra" wire to extend switches and tucked this mess up behind the wall.
The only solution was to set up two J boxes in the attic and pull new wire to the appropriate circuits. Simply identified which wire went to where and wing nut appropriate wires together to allow for all three connections (hot, neutral, ground) to each circuit. Now there's no mess behind the vanity and connections are protected in metal boxes in the attic.
It's always better to consult with an electrician or at least find some good "how to" video on youtube to make the proper upgrades when adding electrical features.
